How important is the banquet scene in this play as a whole? Essay

Before we are able to fully explore the importance of Act III, Scene IV, of Shakespeare’s famous ‘bloody’ tragedy it is necessary to look briefly at what is meant as a tragedy for Shakespeare used tragic circumstances in order to give insight into lots of situations and help tell a story, usually with a moral attached. Although Macbeth is undoubtedly ‘tragic’ and one of the bloodiest and violent of Shakespeare’s plays its tragic nature doesn’t necessarily stem from the murders and grievances within the play. Shakespeare has used Macbeth’s vulnerability and naà ¯Ã‚ ¿Ã‚ ½ve nature to portray tragic circumstances and to highlight the flaws within his character. Macbeth is a fascinating individual; he is transformed by evil from a strong and noble general to a king that will stop at nothing, including murder, to retain his throne and hence his power. However, he is rarely in control of a situation and from the beginning, when he encounters the three witches, deeply suspicious and afraid of the supernatural, ‘Speak if you can, what are you?’ Act I Scene III. This is shown as he depends on the witches to guide him with what to do and good becomes entwined with evil, ‘ Fair is foul, and foul is fair’, Act I Scene I. This also gives us a clue that it is going to be hard in the play to tell the difference between good and evil and when we encounter Banquo’s ghost in Act III, Scene IV we know any glimmer of hope felt by Macbeth since the murder of Banquo is to be short lived. The line ‘fair is foul, and foul is fair’, also indicates a warning to us as readers that things may not necessarily be what they seem and they most definitely are not. Many versions of this quote are used throughout the play including the line of Lady Macbeth’s when she tells Macbeth to; ‘play the humble host’ Act III Scene IV. When she says ‘play’ she is showing that she realises they have to cover up their true feelings. This is similar to ‘fair is foul, and foul is fair’ and can also be compared with the line Lady Macbeth uses to tell her husband to cover up his treachery ‘look like th’ innocent flower, But be the serpent under ‘t’, Act I Scene V, just before Duncan is to arrive at their castle. The banquet scene, therefore, is one of the most important scenes of the play and, once the ghost appears, becomes a pivotal point. Things, up until now, were going relatively smoothly for Macbeth and he has fulfilled his dream of becoming king and his wife, lady Macbeth, queen. Although she knows of Duncan’s murder, she has not been included in the plans for murdering Banquo, ‘Be innocent of the knowledge, dearest Chuck,’ Act III Scene II, and at the beginning of the ‘banquet scene’ he wishes only for her to join in the celebrations for his coronation ‘ Our hostess keeps her state, but in best time we will require her welcome,’ Act III Scene IV Line 6-7. The banquet has been arranged so that the new King and Queen can be properly introduced to their courtiers and is going as planned until the Murderers arrive to tell Macbeth that although they have killed Banquo, Fleance has escaped. Although Macbeth is uneasy about this news, ‘Hath nature that in time will venom breed’ Act III SceneIV and is linked to his doubts about one of Banquo’s predictions from the Witches, ‘Thou shalt get Kings, though thou be none’, he dismisses the murderers and prepares to enjoy the banquet in a ceremonious way. However, his ease is to be short-lived for as he is about to sit down he sees Banquo’s ghost in his place at table. He cannot believe this and questions his Lords, ‘Which of you has done this?’ but they are unable to see the ghost and rise to leave, thinking he is ‘unwell’. Guilt, denial and fear swamp Macbeth, ‘Thou canst not say I did it: never shake thy gory locks at me’, and he thinks someone knows he killed Duncan and is setting him up. It seems guilt is the strongest theme in this scene, it is the reason for the ghost of Banquo being present in Macbeth’s mind only, and his guilty conscience is seeping through with this sign of madness. Although Lady Macbeth accuses her husband of being a coward, ‘This is the very painting of your fear’ as she did at the time of Duncan’s murder, she apologises to the guests and tries to cover up for him saying it is an illness he has had from a child, ‘my Lord is often thus and hath been from his youth.’ Because he is so frightened I feel she is beginning to suspect him of something but does not understand what exactly, ‘Why do you make such faces?’ The Ghost leaves and Macbeth tries to understand what has happened, in Scene II he was saying how lucky Duncan was because he was at peace in death, ‘After life’s fitful fever, he sleeps well’, but now he is worrying because he has seen the dead rise up again and wonders that in his own death he too may not be at peace; ‘But now they rise again with twenty mortal murders on their crowns’. This seems to link in with the supernatural introduced with the witches and shows a weakness and confusion in Macbeth’s character as he fears death; ‘ I have a strange infirmity, which is nothing to those that know me’, Act III Scene IV. After the ghost leaves and the guests have gone it is almost dawn. Lady Macbeth says ‘Night, is almost at odds with morning.’ I feel Lady Macbeth is beginning to doubt her previous actions and seems confused over good and evil becoming entwined. Macbeth makes a short speech that could easily be compared to an earlier scene in the play – Act II Scene II, when Macbeth and Lady Macbeth are washing away Duncan’s blood from their hands. This could be an image of them ‘washing’ away the guilt that, in the end, forces Lady Macbeth to commit suicide when she feels she can’t wash the blood from her hands. This drives her to her madness like the ghost of Banquo starts to do to Macbeth. This is a famous speech that talks about wading in blood and has the word ‘blood’ repeated five times, ‘ blood will have blood’. Macbeth feels he is in this so deep there is no going back, ‘Returning were as tedious as go’er’, the turning point has now been reached and the last line indicates there is more killing to come, ‘We are yet but young in deed.’ This proves the importance of the Banquet Scene. We have reached the end of one chapter and the beginning of another and it is also a turning point in the relationship of Macbeth and Lady Macbeth. At the beginning of the banquet they were as close as they were at the beginning of the play, despite the ‘cloud’ of Duncan’s death. But by the end of the banquet we find Macbeth unable to confide in his wife for advice and going to the witches in place of her, ‘I will to-morrow (And betimes I will) to the Weird Sisters.’ And we now know that Lord and Lady Macbeth do not know darkness from light or evil from good. There must only be darkness and death ahead for them both. Fair has become foul and foul has become fair.

Out of convenience, Pasta Roni is used for a quick flavorful meal. Little attention is given to the preservatives and ample amount of sodium included in each box. Fruit juice is possibly the worst culprit. You drink your juice thinking you’re getting your servings for the day. In actuality you’re getting 10% actual juice and an unhealthy overload of sugars and food colorings. It really pays to read all the nutrition facts when planning a healthy meal change. Finally, knowing a change is needed and providing resistance is a major contributor to an unhealthy diet. For most of us having a set schedule or favorite food is hard to change. Loneliness in Hamlet Everyone faces loneliness and despair in their lives. In today’s world people may feel misunderstood or isolated. In Hamlet, much of the loneliness and suffering he endures is due to the secrets and betrayals he is forced to keep. There were many instances where Hamlet felt alone and upset but he could not share his pain with anyone else. This was a factor that added to his suffering. We can also find many examples of Hamlet’s despair due to betrayal from his so called friends. All of these factors not only contributed heavily to his depression, but caused his overall demise. Throughout the play, Hamlet discovers who is loyal to him and who his real enemies are. Right away, Hamlet dislikes his uncle. He is already distraught over losing his father but on top of that he has to deal with the marriage of his beloved mother to his uncle, who he perceives as being cruel and cold-hearted. "A little more than kin, and less than kind." (I; ii; 65) This is Hamlets first line in the play, which clearly demonstrates the extreme hatred Hamlet has towards his uncle. Hamlet also feels intense betrayal from his mother. He trusted her and feels like she has disregarded any love she ever felt towards her former husband. " Mother, you have my father much offended." Belonging is a paradoxical concept illustrating an individual’s sense of inclusions and exclusion simultaneously. This is evident in Raimond Gaita’s memoir Romulus My father as the individuals Romulus, Raimond and Christine experience the dynamic changes evident in the concept of belong to place, society and community. Armin Greder also explores the fluid and dynamic nature of belonging through his picture book ‘The Island’ through the isolation of the protagonist within the confinements of the island. The inclusion or exclusion from a community is shaped by human prejudices and tolerances. The biographical examination of Romulus’ life with in the text RMF, illustrates his rejection and acceptance within the community of Baringhup. Romulus’ immigrant status shows the division between the new immigrants and the Australians, as the immigrants are forced into a camp. This camp offered shelter and food, though it also offered an opportunity for belonging through shared experiences and cultures, â€Å"He asked the man who greeted new arrivals whether there were any other Romanians†¦ He sought them out and they quickly greeted. Although unaccepted by the Australians, Romulus is able to find other immigrants who he is able to connect with and form relationships, creating a family society between them. Through Romulus’ adoption of the Australian name â€Å"Jack† he attempts to connect to the social milieu of Baringhup though impeded by his unfamiliar morals and values which are not accepted by the Australian community. The strong prejudices of the Australian community are evident in the event of the fire, when Romulus attempts to scare the snake out of the grass through setting alight of the grass. This event causes the exclusion of Romulus in the community â€Å"responding with the instinct of an immigrant†¦ he set fire to the stook†¦Ã¢â‚¬  showing the intolerance of the community and emphasising the belief that he (Romulus) will never be accepted in the Australian community. Yet through Romulus’ contribution to the community through his ironwork and hardworking mentality he is able to be accepted into the community, evidently showing the inconsistent nature of belonging. Similarly, Armin Grader’s picture book â€Å"The Island’ is a metaphorical account of the way prejudices and fear create artificial barriers between people, which are used to exclude others to ensure protection. Shown his lack of clothing the protagonist is identified as foreigner on the island. Through the 4 panelled images we see the foreigner attempt integrating into society by performing civilised jobs, such cooking, carpentry, and singing in the local church. Though in each of these images the man is portrayed in an obscure manner, such as a devil in the choir, showing his exclusion of the individual while performing average tasks of the community, illustrating how belonging to self, controls an individual’s sense of belonging to society, and emphasising the fluid nature of belonging. Due to the social convention the community on the island and the fear evoked by the foreigner, the islanders construct a wall. This wall symbolises the islander’s sense of inclusion to each other as a community and a group which protects and supports each other. It also prevents the islanders from receiving the resources from the ocean, which is one of the main sources of the island livelihood. This artificial wall acts as a barrier to the islands inclusions with the outer world, yet allows the sense of belonging within the confinements of the wall to strengthen. This symbolic use of the wall, illustrates the paradoxical concept of belonging and the dynamic changes within the concept. An individuals belonging to society and community is only achieved through a sense of belong to place. Throughout the memoir, Gaita utilises the surrounding environment as a vehicle to explore the concept of Romulus’ and Raimond’s belonging to the community. â€Å"He longed for the generous and soft European foliage, but the eucalypts of Baringhup†¦ seemed symbols of deprivation and bareness. The negative emotive language shows the negative feelings Romulus has towards the Australian landscape illustrating his lack of connection to the land, thus the lack of connection to the community. In contrast although Raimond is positioned as an outcast by Tom Lillie because of his un-Australian like action, Raimond is able to achieve a connection to the land through his lyrical description of the landscape â€Å"The scraggy shapes and sparse foliage a ctually became the foci for my sense of its beauty and everything else fell into place. This connection allows Raimond to feel a sense of inclusion within the community as they share a common love for the land. The dwelling at Frogmore served to shape Raimond’s sense of belonging by providing place in which his relationship which his father could grow and develop, it also provided him with a constant place where he knew he could feel accepted. Although to Christina the residence at Frogmore becomes a symbol of her unacceptance to the family society â€Å"she could not settle in a dilapidated farmhouse in a landscape that highlighted her isolation. She longed for company† The negative connotations surround the words dilapidated and isolated reinforce the misery that Frogmore and emphasis he disconnection to place, in the one location where she should belong, exemplifying how the ideal of belonging is fluid and dynamic. It is the essence of place that the islanders attempt to maintain during Armin Greder’s text The Island. The close knit community of the island are fearful when the foreigner lands on the shore of their land. Through the singular sentence on the first page â€Å"He wasn’t like them† it is evident that he foreigner was challenging their sense of identity. Through the silent image of the rough sea the foreigners isolation is emphasised. Shown through the protagonist’s lack of clothing the man’s disconnection to the land, his skeletal frame contrasted to the large well-nourished men of the island, emphasis his non-belonging and questions the islander’s fears towards the weak man. The challenge of their land over humanity ultimately results in the men, killing one of their own and sending the foreigner back into the ocean. This illustrates the negative effects of belonging and non-belong, and stress’s the paradoxical nature of belonging as the islanders belong to the community yet excluded themselves from the sea illustrating a consequence of belonging to community is loss of place. Within both texts RMF and The Island, Gaita and Greder present the concept of belonging as of a fluid and dynamic nature. This paradoxical nature of belonging illustrates an individual’s sense of inclusion and/or exclusion simultaneously, as the protagonists are faced with the challenge of not belonging within a society yet conflicted by the sense of belonging to place concurrently, evidently showing the concept of belonging within place, society and community.

Becoming bats? Or Simply Hearing a Story? Stranger Than Fiction, directed by Mark Forster, is an unusual movie. I in person liked the movie really much, scarcely it was definitely out of the mainstream of movies today. The main example, Harold Krick (played by Will Ferrell) is a seemingly figure IRS agent that lives life on a very punctual and precise schedule. He is constantly on time for things and fifty-fifty counting the number of times he brushes his teeth in the morningThe character that Ferrell acts is not the typical character that Ferrell whole shebang on, exactly it is a very wide change for him because it somewhat makes the consultation trust that there will be something sufferdic in the movie. As a whole, the cast was a very good choice and suffer the characters well. The movie is very delightful because it shows divers(a) different themes in it. For example, the movie contains a sprinkle of bildungsroman qualities through the character education in Harold Krick.He evolves from a precise person, always on time scarcely not re in ally enjoying life to a valorous and caring person. In the beginning of the movie, the interview is revealed that Harold is very mathematical, shown by the conglomerate lines and measurements be on objects, and the fact that Harold can knead complex math problems in his head. This all changes when he hears a womans voice with a British accent. Harold believes that he is insane in the beginning, but he soon realizes that the voice is actually narrating his life.Upon that discovery, he searches for someone to garter him which results in the audience meeting Professor Jules Hilbert (Dustin Hoffman), a very learned professor in concurs and prose. I found some raillery in this because his book shelves have various cookbooks and different types of books that do not appertain to prose. Professor Hilbert believes that Harold is schizophrenic at first, but when he hears the whole story, he decides to help H arold by telling him to carry a notebook around to see if the book is a comedy or a tragedy.The actors in the movie were absolutely phenomenal. The actors train the attitude of the characters and Will Ferrell was one of the best. He takes the viewer off guard by being in a good movie, and actually plays the part very well. Ferrells acting felt as if he was actually Harold and didnt know what was misfortune in his life. The story line is a fairly straightforward structure, except for the plot of ground twist at the end. It truly shows how Harold and other characters have developed through this movie.The overall mood of the movie is fairly tragical until the plot twist. Although the mood was sad, the cinematography and light up were simply amazing throughout the movie. The medication in Stranger Than Fiction was an master soundtrack, with good songs throughout. This movie can be confusing at the end if you are not paying attention, because all of the facts come at you in qui ck succession. My eyeshot on if someone should rent or buy this movie would have to be rent it. The movie was well done, but not enough to make viewers want to watch the film again.
